Center has recently announced their Review Santa Fe 100. Lots of familiar names here. Congrats Susan, Aline, Christine, Jeffris... too many names to list.
Also, note that NPR's Photography Blog, The Picture Show, has been checking in with our Reviewers to find out whose work they recently saw that was of interest. Since Melanie McWhorter had already done this for PDN, she took the opportunity to talk about someone who she didn't get a chance to meet with, but wishes she would have: Nicole Jean Hill. Will keep you posted when they run the others. I tell you, I find the idea of photolucida photographers getting attention from NPR pretty exciting...

Three Super Cool things
1) Tim Hyde's Repossession project. Tim was one of our NW Summer Review participants.
2) Tim's project being picked up and given a little more attention in the new issue of Fraction magazine.
3) Tim's project then being noticed in Fraction and picked up for a little more attention in Lens, the new photography blog for the New York Times.
Congrats Tim (and Fraction, and Lens)...

ODDS & ENDS
• Alejandro Chaskielberg (CM2008 Top50) is the first of 10 Finalists announced for burn's Emerging Photographer Fund
• Lori Waselchuck (CM2008 Top50) is among the recipients of the Aaron Siskind Foundation's Individual Photographer Fellowships
congrats to both.
• Also, worth noting, En Foco's got a call for entries out: People/Places/Things
the Early Bird deadline is June 24th. For an additional $10, you can have until July 1.
One other important item: It's time to start thinking about Critical Mass 2009 as we'll be opening up for submissions in July. That said, we're eagerly compiling our invite list to determine who we should invite to join the ranks of our Much-Beloved and Esteemed Reviewers. By all means, send me an email and throw some names out. Contact information certainly helps too. For an almost complete list from last year, go here.
oops, forgot to mention this call for entries at Rayko also. deadline is June 25

the NY Times thinks $25 for a meal is frugal
but you and I know better. Come to Portland and I'll steer you to a "Dutch taco," a thin waffle folded over your favorite savory or sweet ingredients: sausage & maple butter, vegan sausage & maple butter ($4?), peanut butter & gelatin-free marshmallow fluff, or, among my personal favorites: fresh organic blueberries & lemon curd. ($6?)
Still though, the NYTimes article did a great job pointing out some of the highlights Portland has to offer. It's definitely worth checking out.

Best out-of-context quote of the day:
"The photographs require a bit of explanation, and the viewer needs to do more than just look—they also have to think, which can sometimes pose a challenge."
from this fantastic feature in Photo District News. PDN is following up on our recent Reviews by running slideshows and commentary with 3 Reviewers, each selecting a participating photographer whose work interested them.
part I: ANN PALLESSEN on RITA BERNSTEIN
part II: BRIAN PAUL CLAMP on SARAH MALAKOFF
part III: ? I can't wait...

Congrats to
Matt Eich, one of our CM 2008 Top50, who just received the Bright Spark Award in the Magenta Foundation's Flash Forward competition. I also recognize quite a few other names among the winners as being previous CM and Review participants and/or Reviewers even- Lucas Oleniuk, Michael Lundgren, Jennifer Boomer, Jon Feinstein... congrats to all.

HEY, PHOTOGRAPHER!
the OjodePez Award for Human Values is accepting submissions through May 15th. The winner receives 6000 euros. Let's see, my currency calculator says that comes out to over 8,000 US Dollars. And my lifestyle calculator converts that to a whopping 2000 burritos.

We heart
Aline Smithson.
Not only is her work great, but she's got a great blog chock full of thorough and thoughtful profiles on some of the participants from our recent Reviews.

CALL FOR ENTRIES
In lieu of a juried member's exhibition, Camerawork has chosen to craft an exhibition with a more egalitarian outline and it's open to everyone! Hence the title: Ersatz Group Exhibition—meaning literally a substitute group exhibition—in reference to our shift away from the juried exhibition model. Utilizing the strategies and conceptual links of mail art allows for a more inclusive process with a broad reach. The idea is provide a service to help artists meet one another, help artists promote their work and to get their work in front of a large group of international curators. Artworks mailed in should reflect each artists' practice in some way, think of it as an advertisement for yourself! This Wikipedia link provides useful background on the history of mail art. Several artists and curators were consulted about what would be most beneficial to artists and all of those suggestions have been included within the structure of the exhibition:
YOUR WORK WILL BE FEATURED IN AN EXHIBITION:
Your lens-based work will be included in an exhibition at SF Camerawork from June 4 to August 22, 2009.
YOUR WORK WILL BE FEATURED IN A PUBLICATION:
A reproduction of your contributed artwork, name, and personal website URL will be included in the exhibition catalog, available mid-summer 2009 via blurb.com and as a PDF download via sfcamerawork.org Curators Lawrence Rinder and Evelyne Jouanno will tour the exhibition and respond to the work by contributing a text to this publication.
YOUR WORK WILL BE FEATURED ON CAMRAWORK'S WEBSITE ARTIST LINKS PAGE:
Artists' personal website URLs will be included on the sfcamerawork.org links page as a resource for curators.
YOUR WORK IS INCLUDED IN AN INTERNATIONAL GIFT EXCHANGE:
In the spirit of a creative exchange economy, once the exhibition closes all participants will receive a work from the exhibition to be redistributed randomly with the Fall/Winter issue of Camerawork: A Journal of Photographic Arts in September 2009. Your own work will not be returned to you.
YOUR WORK COULD BE ON THE COVER OF CAMERAWORK'S JOURNAL:
One (or more) work(s) will be chosen for the cover of the fall issue of Camerawork: A Journal of Photographic Arts.
