Sunday, July 19, 2009

• Susan Baraz, Lucie Awards

• Darren Ching, Klompching Gallery / Photo District News

• Jon Feinstein, Humble Arts

•Melanie Flood, Melanie Flood Projects

•Roy Flukinger, Harry Ransom Center

• Kate Menconeri, Independent Curator

• Ruben Natal-San Miguel, Collector / blogger

• Tina Schelhorn, Galerie Lichtblick

• Susan Spiritus, Susan Spiritus Gallery

• Paula Tognarelli, Griffin Museum for Photography

and not to mention:

• our entire Board of Directors

and yeah, I know... "Board of Directors" sounds vague, and maybe a little stuffy, but look at our list and note that one of the great aspects of our organization is that ultimately, the services we offer, Critical Mass, our Reviews, etc. have been born out of the minds of photographers and gallery people who are simply excited about photography and trying to create opportunities for people to get their work out there. It's kind of like the hair club for men... I'm not only the President, I'm also a client*:

*note however, the above reference is in no way meant to suggest that our Board of Directors is bald and that if they were, that there would be anything wrong with that. In fact, I'm the baldest member of the board, and we're all photographers. I guess that's the point.

Tuesday's alphabetized list of things worth noting

© Manuel Vazquez

A) did you notice that mus-mus has extended their call for entries for their online @Paris exhibition, juried by Denise Wolff, Stephen Shore, and Gil Blank?

B) did you notice that CM08 Top 50 photographer Manuel Vazquez just had his work published in Hotshoe Magazine?

C) did you notice that CM08 Finalist Alejandro Chaskelbierg won the Emerging Photographer Grant from burn?

D) did you notice how many of our previous CM and/or Reviews participants are included in the Photo-Op show that opens at PCNW this month?

E) did you notice that both of this month's shows at Blue Sky, Amy Stein and Ferit Kuyas, are former Critical Mass participants?

F) did you notice that we've finally updated the "success stories" page on our website? And did you notice how quickly such updates are out of date?

G) did you notice that this post says Tuesday, but I accidentally pressed the button and put it out on Monday?

DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THAT

the most recent issue of Photo District News, the Fine-Art issue, is chock full of our people, photographers who've attended our Reviews or gone through Critical Mass, Reviewers and Jurors from each as well. I'm not even going to get into listing names as it'll take me too long, but there are loads and loads in there. And, the final bit of text in the entire issue just happens to be this quote from Andy Freeberg, one of our CM08 Book Award Winners:

"The great thing about Fotofest and Critical Mass is that you get the work in front of so many people."

Note that I've amended the list of Jurors for Critical Mass 2009 about twenty times so far since I orginally posted it Friday, as the acceptances are still coming in. Registration is open and even without us sending a mailing or anything out yet (wanted to make sure the programming bugs are totally worked out first), the registrations are coming in strong. Does that mean people actually read this blog?

CRITICAL MASS 2009 IS NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

Replies from our invited jurors are still coming in (and will continue to trickle in over the next few weeks), but the list of our Much Beloved and Appreciated Jurors for Critical Mass 2009 is taking shape and is a really fantastic group. Many are our "regulars" back to see this year's great work, but there are some exciting new names here as well:
